The Pastoral Galaxidi

Galaxidi a seafaring place is yet surrounded by meadows where thousands of goats and sheep grazed from ancient times until recently. Today, the meadows have been left wild or planted with olives, but everywhere you can find ruins of sheep folds , stones and foundations of huts as well as old paths, mule tracks and stone walls that supported platforms for small crops.

Most of the corrals are now in ruins but their architecture is evident. They are built of dry-stone collected from the area in irregular shapes that follow the ground.

You rarely find traces of the wooden roofs. Among them there are some ancient corrals as well as newer ones built on ancient bases.

Many families who live and work professionally in Galaxidi have a pastoral origin. Today there are only a few herds in the area.

See samples in the following photo album and go out into the countryside to discover them with respect to the past and the ancestors.
